Editorial Policy

How we approach our movie coverage

Movies in the 90s is an independent editorial site dedicated to the films, filmmakers and movie culture of the 1980s.

We want our articles to be entertaining enough to make you want to rewatch a movie, but useful and carefully researched enough to tell you something worth knowing about it.

Our editorial principles

Our coverage is written for people who genuinely enjoy movies. We aim to combine factual research with informed editorial commentary rather than simply repeating plot summaries, cast lists or information that can be found anywhere else.

We believe factual claims and editorial opinion should be distinguishable. Facts should have a reasonable evidential basis. Opinions, interpretations and judgements are presented as editorial views rather than objective facts.

Where reliable information is not available, we would rather leave something out than present speculation as fact.

Research and accuracy

Movie articles may draw on multiple sources of information when researching production history, cast and crew, release information, filmmaking, reception, legacy and other factual subjects.

We aim to use information that can be reasonably supported and to avoid presenting rumours, assumptions or unsupported production stories as established fact.

Not every piece of information discovered during research is necessarily included in an article. If we are not sufficiently confident in a claim, we may choose not to publish it.

Reviews, retrospectives and opinion

Movies in the 90s is not intended to be a neutral database. Part of the fun of revisiting cinema is talking about what works, what does not, what has aged brilliantly and what now feels unmistakably tied to its era.

Reviews, rankings, comparisons, recommendations and retrospective judgements therefore contain editorial opinion. Different viewers may reasonably reach very different conclusions about the same movie.

We do not change an editorial opinion simply because a studio, distributor, advertiser or other commercial party disagrees with it.

Corrections

Despite our efforts, mistakes can happen. If a factual error is brought to our attention, we will review it and correct the article where appropriate.

We distinguish factual corrections from differences of opinion. A disagreement with a review or interpretation does not necessarily mean that an article contains a factual error.

If you believe we have published something factually incorrect, please contact us with details of the article and the information you believe should be reviewed.

Editorial independence

Movies in the 90s is an independent publication. Editorial decisions are based on what we believe will be interesting, useful or entertaining for our readers.

Advertising, sponsorships, affiliate relationships or other commercial arrangements do not determine our editorial opinions.

If commercial content is ever produced in partnership with another organisation, we aim to identify that relationship clearly so readers can understand the nature of the content they are viewing.

Advertising and affiliate links

Movies in the 90s may use advertising, affiliate links or other forms of commercial support to help fund the operation of the site.

The existence of an advertising or affiliate relationship does not guarantee positive coverage and does not change our editorial judgement.

Where a link may generate revenue for Movies in the 80s, we aim to provide appropriate disclosure where required.

Images and third-party material

Movie titles, character names, posters, stills, artwork and other third-party materials may belong to their respective copyright and trademark owners.

Where third-party material is used for editorial, identification, criticism, review or commentary, we aim to use it proportionately and in context.

Copyright or rights concerns can be submitted through our contact page.

Keeping this policy current

Our editorial processes may evolve as Movies in the 80s grows. We may update this policy to reflect significant changes to the way we research, produce or fund our coverage.
